Overturn Citizens United

To restore democracy, we propose an amendment to limit the influence of money in politics.

Why Overturn Citizens United?

The Citizens United Supreme Court decision has led to the unchecked influence of money in politics. The super‑rich effectively have thousands of votes compared to the average citizen. This amendment aims to restore democratic balance by redefining the First Amendment.

Proposed Changes to the First Amendment

Original First Amendment:

“Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.”

Proposed Amendments:

  • 1.a. ‘Speech’ shall refer to the spoken or written word but shall not extend to recordings or moving images, which may be regulated.
  • 1.b. Congress and the States may limit spending on political advertising or exclusively finance election campaigns.
  • 1.c. ‘The press’ shall refer to fact-based news organizations that meet a two‑thirds accuracy standard when challenged in court.
